On 12 November, the Ukrainian-language Facebook page Новини України і світу сьогодні published a video showing Ukrainian soldiers on the battlefield with their hands raised. One of the soldiers says in Ukrainian: “The command has fled. There is no communication. There is no ammunition. We were deceived.”
The same video was shared on Instagram on 13 November.
The circulated video of Ukrainian soldiers was created using artificial intelligence and contains defects typical of AI-generated footage.
Several details indicate that the video is AI-generated. The number of people shown and the number of hands visible do not match. Some raised hands have more than five fingers, and the face of one soldier standing further back appears smudged. When the frame zooms in, this same soldier’s face changes, and his mustache gradually appears thicker.
In addition to these inaccuracies, the speaker’s mouth movements do not precisely match the words he is supposedly uttering, which is a common flaw in videos created using artificial intelligence.
The AI-detection tool Hive Moderation shows the same result. According to the software’s analysis, the probability that the video uses AI or deepfake technology is 86%.
