On January 11, an image of characters from the American animated series “The Simpsons” was disseminated on Facebook. The image shows the characters standing on a street with buildings on both sides engulfed in flames, with the famous Hollywood sign visible beyond those buildings. The post is accompanied by the caption “Another prediction by The Simpsons.”

The image of The Simpsons shared on Facebook shows signs of being generated by artificial intelligence and is not related to the fires that broke out in California. The claim that various events have been “predicted” in The Simpsons is part of a well-known conspiracy theory.

The image circulating on Facebook was likely created by AI. In the image, some of the characters (Bart and Homer Simpson) appear twice. Additionally, Maggie Simpson is shown three times, in one of which she is wearing Lisa Simpson’s clothes. Furthermore, the signs on the facades of buildings on both sides of the street are blurred, making them unreadable. All these details are typical errors associated with AI-generated images.

Over the course of 36 seasons, the series has depicted numerous natural disasters, including fires. In the 12th episode of season 18, titled “Little Big Girl,” a fire starts at a farm, which spreads to the fictional town of Springfield, and Bart Simpson accidentally puts it out (1,2). There is no indication in the episode that the plot has anything to do with California or Hollywood. This is not the only episode featuring Springfield caught in fire; in the first episode of season 28, a newly erected chrome statue reflects the sun’s rays, causing a fire in the city (1,2).

The occurrence of wildfires in the state of California is linked to dry climate and strong winds. As of January 13, the fire claimed the lives of 24 people, and a dozen others were considered missing. Approximately 105,000 people have been evacuated from the disaster zone.

This is not the first time that “The Simpsons” has been attributed to predicting a natural disaster or a significant political event. Over the years, these claims have become part of conspiracy theories. In reality, these “predictions” are either mere coincidences or do not even appear in the series at all and are incorrectly attributed to it. The Myth Detector has previously fact-checked similar claims. Read more in the materials:
