On September 28-29, information was circulated on Facebook (1;2) claiming that New York City Mayor Eric Adams had been removed from office and arrested for his involvement with rapper P. Diddy and participation in his criminal activities. One Facebook page also wrote that Adams was the main organizer of parties at the rapper’s house.
The claim that the New York City mayor was arrested for involvement in the crimes P. Diddy is accused of is false. Eric Adams was charged on September 26 with receiving illegal contributions and bribery from a foreign national. He has not been arrested and remains in office as mayor.
On September 26, federal prosecutors charged New York City Mayor Eric Adams with five counts, including bribery, conspiracy, fraud, and accepting illegal campaign donations from a foreign national.
Prosecutors allege that Adams received illegal donations from Turkish nationals over several years, including for his 2021 election campaign, and also received benefits such as free hotel rooms in luxury hotels, free flights, and meals at expensive restaurants. In return, he allegedly pressured city officials to approve the opening of a 36-story Turkish consulate building, which posed security risks as the New York City Fire Department inspector pointed out deficiencies in the fire systems.
It is noteworthy that Eric Adams is the first sitting mayor of New York City to face criminal charges while in office. Moreover, by law, Adams will remain mayor even if he is arrested. There are only two ways he can leave office before his term ends: 1. Resignation; or 2. The governor of New York has the power to remove him from office.
There are no open-source records linking the mayor to the rapper’s organized parties. It is known, however, that in September 2023, Adams presented the singer with the “key to the city.” However, after the case against the rapper and the release of a video showing P. Diddy abusing his former girlfriend, Adams requested in June 2024 that the rapper return the symbolic key.
Rapper P. Diddy, also known as Sean Combs, was arrested in New York on September 17. He is accused of kidnapping women, drugging them, and forcing them into sexual activity (sometimes under the threat of firearms and violence). After his arrest, information about several celebrities allegedly involved in the crime was circulated on social media and in tabloid media. One such celebrity is singer Jay-Z, with claims that he was one of the main organizers of Diddy’s criminal parties and was therefore arrested. In reality, the investigation is ongoing, specific details have not been disclosed to the public, and prosecutors have not filed charges against Jay-Z or any other individuals involved in the case.
