On September 26, federal prosecutors charged New York City Mayor Eric Adams with five counts, including bribery, conspiracy, fraud, and accepting illegal campaign donations from a foreign national.
Prosecutors allege that Adams received illegal donations from Turkish nationals over several years, including for his 2021 election campaign, and also received benefits such as free hotel rooms in luxury hotels, free flights, and meals at expensive restaurants. In return, he allegedly pressured city officials to approve the opening of a 36-story Turkish consulate building, which posed security risks as the New York City Fire Department inspector pointed out deficiencies in the fire systems.
