On October 24, 2023, lawyer Irakli Zakareishvili published a post on Facebook, claiming that an anti-Zionist Jew in Jerusalem made a statement against the bloodshed, which is why he was beaten by the Israeli police and other Jews. The post is accompanied by a video showing an alleged physical confrontation between police and Jews.

The claims voiced in the post are false. In fact, the video has nothing to do with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the footage is old and it shows the police trying to arrest an ultra-Orthodox protester, whom other demonstrators were trying to save. The protest action was held against mandatory military service.

The video was circulating on social networks as early as June (1, 2, 3.), but the posts indicated that the footage depicted the arrest of ultra-Orthodox protesters by the police near the military recruitment office in Jerusalem. The video also shows that the Jews shown in the footage are not helping the police, but the arrested person.

In order to obtain detailed information on the mentioned issue, “Myth Detector” contacted the media (All World News), whose logo is shown in the video. Itamar Cohen, the owner and editor of the media website, confirmed in writing that the footage is indeed old, it was taken by a company cameraman, after which he posted it on his social networks on June 5, 2023. Cohen also specified that the group of protestors in question were ultra-Orthodox, called “Haredim”, and they held a protest in front of the military conscription office on Rashi Street in East Jerusalem, which lasted for about an hour. According to him, the police arrested 2 demonstrators. In addition, Itamar Cohen noted that the media “All World News” has existed for more than 5 years and its main audience is right-wing Israelis.

Notably, similar cases happen rather often in Israel. Over the course of the year, the ultra-Orthodox have repeatedly held protests against Israel’s mandatory military service, mainly in Jerusalem. They block the central roads, or the entrances to the recruitment office, which mostly ends with confrontations with the police, raids, and arrests of some of the protesters (1, 2, 3).

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, “Myth Detector” debunked a number of false and manipulative claims on the topic.
