On December 11, media outlets with pro-government editorial policies, including Imedi, Mkhare.ge (1; 2; 3), and Exclusive News, as well as the Facebook page “Conscience-Free Media” and several Facebook accounts (1; 2), disseminated information claiming that “Trump demanded Zelenskyy immediately stop the war.” The Facebook page “Conscience-Free Media” noted that Trump issued an ultimatum to Zelenskyy. The posts indicated that Reuters was the source of the information.

The information disseminated by the media and similar phrasing are manipulative, creating the impression that Donald Trump is demanding an end to the war from Zelenskyy and unilaterally placing responsibility for the conflict on Ukraine’s president. In reality, according to a Reuters article, Trump stated that he wants an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to quickly end the war. In a statement released after the meeting, Trump also addressed Putin’s responsibility.

Both, Imedi’s information card and the information published by other media outlets and Facebook pages create the impression that Donald Trump is holding Volodymyr Zelenskyy accountable for the ongoing war and directly demanding that he stop it. However, the Reuters article notes that during the meeting between the future U.S. leader and the presidents of Ukraine and France, Trump reiterated his desire for an immediate ceasefire and the initiation of negotiations. Reuters based its report on nine informed sources regarding the details of the December 7 meeting.

“The three leaders, who talked for 35 minutes without advisers in the Elysee’s Golden Room, did not discuss specific details of any vision for peace, but Trump repeated that he wanted an immediate ceasefire and negotiations to end the war quickly,” Reuters reports.

The text does not mention or imply that Trump holds Zelenskyy responsible and is asking him to stop the war. According to the article, the meeting proposed some early clues as to how negotiations for resolving the conflict might play out. However, it also notes that the process, in which Russian President Vladimir Putin will be involved, will be fraught with challenges, and the role of the U.S. is still unclear.

“Some key points were mentioned during the meeting – for example, it was said that peace needs guarantees because a ceasefire alone isn’t enough, Putin could break it again, as he has done before, without proper guarantees,” a source from the Ukrainian president’s office told Reuters. When asked how these guarantees would be obtained, the source said that Trump is “thinking about all the details.”

According to another Reuters source, during the meeting, Macron and Zelenskyy explained to Trump that Putin in 2024 is no longer the Kremlin leader he spoke to in 2017, during his first presidential term. “Without cornering him,” they explained to Trump that a tougher stance is needed towards the Russian president.

Thus, the full text of the Reuters article discusses that during the meeting, Donald Trump repeatedly expressed his desire for a ceasefire in Ukraine and for negotiations to begin between the parties. The article does not suggest that Trump is unilaterally placing the responsibility on Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as according to the article, the discussion during the meeting was about Ukraine needing guarantees and that Russia had previously violated agreements.

It is worth noting that a few hours after the meeting, Donald Trump posted on social media about the Russia-Ukraine war. He wrote that Zelenskyy and Ukraine would want to reach an agreement and “stop the madness.” In the same post, Trump also emphasized Vladimir Putin’s responsibility: “I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!”
