On January 12, Facebook user Dato Nacvlishvili (12) posted a video allegedly featuring Gen Z taking an oath. A similar video was posted by the pro-government media outlet POSTV (12) and its journalist, Natia Beridze, but with the following caption: “Doiashvili’s troupe.” The video includes the following phrases: “I will eat the dog’s shit,” “I will chew cat food,” “I will get a lip augmentation and a boob job,” “I will graze along with cows,” “I will drink cyanide…”

The dissemination of the video by pro-government media and certain accounts aims to discredit the ongoing process, as well as the Vaso Abashidze State New Theatre and its director, Davit Doiashvili, while the caption, claiming that the video depicts the “Gen Z” taking an oath, is misleading. In reality, the video shows a scene from the play “Love and Information,” which is performed on the stage of the Theatre on Atoneli. The actors involved in the play also perform at the Vaso Abashidze Theatre.

The video shared by POSTV and Natia Beridze clearly shows the name of the TikTok account that uploaded it. The account, lmikadze, specifies that the video was shot at the Theatre on Atoneli.

The video was filmed during the play “Love and Information,” directed by Mikheil Charkviani and performed on the stage of the Theatre on Atoneli. Director Davit Doiashvili did not participate in the production, and it was not staged at the Vaso Abashidze Theatre.

“Love and Information” is based on the play by British playwright Caryl Churchill. In this production, director Mikheil Charkviani, along with the creative team, explores broad social and political issues in a chaotic world, focusing on them within an extremely narrow, local context, reads the description of the play.

It is noteworthy that three actors participate in the play: Giviko Baratashvili, Anastasia Chanturaia, and Luka Japaridze. Although the play was staged at the Theatre on Atoneli, all three actors are members of the troupe at the Vaso Abashidze State New Theatre.

Therefore, the video circulating on social media does not depict the “Gen Z taking an oath” and the real statements of young people. It is actually a fragment from the play, as indicated by the original source of the video.

The dissemination of the video with such a description by pro-government media and certain accounts, along with attempts to discredit the Vaso Abashidze Theatre and its director, is likely connected to Doiashvili’s statement on January 11. Doiashvili, along with his team, is demanding the release of actor Andro Chichinadze by January 20; otherwise, according to Doiashvili, they will move from passive protest to action. Actor Andro Chichinadze was arrested on December 5. He is accused of participating in group violence during protest rallies.

In parallel with the nationwide protests against the government’s decision to suspend the country’s European integration process, Myths Detector is systematically verifying false information circulating on social media regarding these protests. During this period, similar video manipulations have been frequently spread, which were aimed against the protests and demonstrators.

About the sources:

One of those who spread the video filmed during the play is POSTV journalist Natia Beridze. She has previously spread several video and photo manipulations, as well as posts with disinformation. Myth Detector has repeatedly verified posts she shared.

Dato Nacvlishvili is a supporter of the pro-Kremlin political party Alt Info. He frequently spreads anti-Western content as well as posts aimed at discrediting Georgian opposition members, journalists, and activists, including false information.
