On July 2-3, several Facebook groups (1,2,3) and personal accounts (1,2,3) circulated information claiming that the Syrian government had withdrawn its recognition of Abkhazia’s “independence.”
The claims that the government of Syria has withdrawn the recognition of Abkhazia cannot be confirmed. No official statements have been released by the Syrian or Georgian government.
The claims circulating on Facebook that Syria has rescinded its recognition of Abkhazia’s so-called “independence” are not supported by official sources. Neither Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1,2) nor Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1,2) has published any information confirming such a development.
The interest in the topic increased after it became known that the annual declaration of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly would include a call for the Syrian government to revoke its recognition of the “independence” of Georgia’s occupied territories. The Assembly adopted the Porto Declaration on July 3.
Earlier, in January 2025, Georgia’s opposition parties, including the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, Gakharia-For Georgia, and Strong Georgia, have also called on Syria’s new government to reverse its recognition of the “independence” of the occupied regions. The appeal was addressed to President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Notably, Syrian media reported that on June 28, Syria’s foreign minister met with the so-called “foreign minister” of Abkhazia. However, this meeting has not been officially confirmed by the Syrian Foreign Affairs Ministry.
