On December 30th, 2021, the Facebook page “Politicano” – a Facebook page linked with Yevgeny Primakov Russian-Georgian Public Center – published a post about the UN resolution against the glorification of Nazism. The post asserted that the resolution initiated by Russia was not supported by 49 states, including the US and Ukraine. The text states that the “political establishment and multinational corporations” of the US had “rather warm relations” with Nazi Germany, an echo of which seems to have survived to this day. The text is accompanied by a meme, according to which Ukraine and the US refuse to stop glorifying Nazism even today.

The assertion that the US and Ukraine support the glorification of Nazism is manipulative, and the information concerning the UN resolution is being disseminated without context. In fact, the US refused to support the resolution due to the threat of restricting freedom of expression, assembly and association, while the Ukrainian side said the resolution did not condemn the crimes of the communist regime but stressed that refusing to support the resolution does not equal the support of the Nazi ideology.

The resolution against the glorification of Nazism has been discussed annually by the UN General Assembly since 2012. In a vote on November 17th, 2016, 131 countries supported the resolution, while three countries: The United States, Ukraine and Palau opposed it. In 2018, the US and Ukraine were the only countries opposing the resolution. The same countries announced another refusal to adopt the resolution in November 2021 as well. Representatives of the countries explain their refusal to support the resolution as follows:

The US:  The official US representation at the UN clarified that the US believes the resolution is politicized and impedes freedom of expression, assembly and association. The explanation also states that the US does not defend Nazi ideology and condemns all manifestations of racism, xenophobia and discrimination.

Ukraine: In 2017, a Ukrainian spokesman clarified that the refusal was linked to the fact that the resolution does not condemn the crimes of the Stalin regime. In 2018, Ukraine’s representative to the UN noted that millions of Ukrainians had contributed to the victory over Nazism, adding that the resolution is not a lever against Nazism and called on others not to support it. The representative explained that the support of the Russian Federation for the resolution against Nazism while committing crimes against other nations is cynical. The Ukrainian side believes that the resolution has propaganda motives.
