On October 14, media outlets with pro-government editorial policy POSTV and Publicist.ge (1,2), along with anonymous Facebook pages (1,2,3), published a video featuring Nino Lomjaria, the founder of the platform “European Orbit of Georgia.” POSTV added a description to the video that reads, “Nino Lomjaria: unfortunately, our country is the most dear to us,” whereas anonymous pages refer to her as “stateless” and an “enemy of the country.” In the video, the former public defender states: “Unfortunately, all of us, the most important… The most important and most beloved for us is our country. However, we Georgians often believe that Georgia is the center of the world and that global politics revolves around our country, but that is not the case.”

Pro-government media and anonymous pages are disseminating Nino Lomjaria’s video without context. The videos and accompanying description create the impression that she is expressing concern about Georgians’ deep love for their homeland. In reality, in the video, Lomjaria discusses the deteriorating relations between “Georgian Dream” and the West. It is in this context that Lomjaria states that, unfortunately, some citizens, out of love for their country, believe that world politics revolves around Georgia. However, in reality, the West will not support the country against its will.

The “Polit-Kalaki” show of the TV company Palitranius, with the former public defender as a guest, was published on the media’s Facebook page on October 13. In one segment of the program (starting at 21:20), the journalist and the respondent discuss the deteriorating relations between “Georgian Dream” and the West. Lomjaria addresses the statements of Western politicians, noting that with the ruling party’s rhetoric, adopted laws, and plans, EU membership and the renewal of European integration will not be achievable.

Journalist: Some people argue that the geopolitical situation necessitates our need for the European Union. In response to this, the German ambassador recently stated, “Don’t think that we will chase after you.”

Lomjaria: “Let’s put it this way: the EU and the West are not Russia. So, what is the essential difference, right? If you don’t want it, the European Union will not come and conquer you. They won’t beg. To a certain extent, they are begging us now. Let’s admit that we are in an extraordinary situation; it wasn’t like this before, and it breaks my heart because they do not behave this way in normal circumstances. But if this continues, the EU, the US…”

Journalist: “If you don’t do as they say, if you don’t become democratic, etc., then [West] won’t beg anymore. That’s what we’re talking about. They have the idea that [West] will turn a blind eye to everything based on geopolitical interests.”

Lomjaria: “It is not like that. Us, Unfortunately, all of us, the most important… The most important and most beloved for us is our country. However, we Georgians often believe that Georgia is the center of the world and that global politics revolves around our country, but that is not the case. It is possible for the situation to change in such a way that Georgia… The US also has this policy – Even in countries where it has spent hundreds of billions, when it sees that they do not want its presence there, it simply leaves. Therefore, their policy is not to force their support, help, or standing by your side on you.”

The full quote illustrates that the journalist and the respondent are discussing the attitude of Western countries and the European Union toward Georgia. They clarify that the West will not assist Georgia if the country is unwilling to accept this help and support. During the conversation, the journalist refers to the portion of society that believes the European Union needs Georgia, at least because of its geopolitical location. They argue that due to these interests, it turns a blind eye to several issues. It is in relation to this idea that Lomjaria uses the word “unfortunately” – According to her, some Georgians think that world politics revolves around Georgia due to their love for their country, but this is not the case, and the situation may change. POSTV, Publicist, and anonymous pages edited a 20-second clip from the interview and circulated it without context, creating the impression that the respondent is expressing concern about Georgians’ deep love for their homeland, which is false.
