On January 25, pro-government TV channel Imedi posted an information card with the description saying, “Ambassador Fischer Against Foreign Affairs Ministry.” The posted card compares the statement of German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer that Salome Zourabichvili is the President of Georgia with a statement allegedly made by the German Foreign Ministry that “Mikheil Kavelashvili is the President of Georgia.”
In the comments under the information card, Imedi TV provided a link to the article titled “In an official letter, the German Foreign Ministry recognizes Mikheil Kavelashvili as the President of Georgia.” The article is based on a video posted on X by Florian Warweg, a journalist from the online publication NachDenkSeiten. In the video, Warweg asks a question at a German federal government press conference, inquiring why the German Ambassador to Georgia still refers to Salome Zourabichvili as president when, according to a letter sent by the German Foreign Ministry to the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) party on January 16, 2025, “On December 29, 2024, Georgian Dream representative Mikheil Kavelashvili, a candidate elected in the December 14, 2024 elections, entered the presidential residence.” Based on this letter, Imedi put the German Foreign Ministry’s supposed position – “Mikheil Kavelashvili is the President of Georgia” – on its information card.

What Did Imedi Not Tell Its Readers?
In reality, the letter from the German Foreign Ministry, which the journalist displays in the video, also states that Mikheil Kavelashvili’s legitimacy is disputed in Georgia. Imedi TV did not provide this information to its audience. As a result, the caption on the information card regarding the German Foreign Ministry’s position requires additional context.

The document on which Imedi bases its claim, and the authenticity of which Myth Detector cannot verify, shows that Andrej Hunko, a member of the German Bundestag, addressed a question to the State Secretary of the German Foreign Ministry, Thomas Bagger. Hunko is a representative of the left-wing populist party “Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance” (BSW), whose foreign policy is often described as pro-Russian. Hunko asked who, according to the latest German federal government data, is the President of Georgia and when a government representative last had contact with the Georgian President or his office.
The response to Hunko’s question is dated January 16, 2025. The document reads:
“On December 29, 2024, Mikheil Kavelashvili, the Georgian Dream candidate elected by the electoral college on December 14, entered the official presidential residence of Georgia. His legitimacy is disputed in Georgia.”
Imedi’s article does not mention this final sentence, even though the information card about the German Foreign Ministry’s official position was created based on this response.
Florian Warweg also published an article on the matter, which includes the second part of the document saying that the German Embassy in Tbilisi maintains constant contact with Georgian officials. The last recorded contact between the Chief of Administration of the Georgian President’s Office and a representative of the German Embassy took place on December 23, 2024. The inauguration of Kavelashvili took place on December 29, 2024.

In the published video, the German journalist also asks why the German Foreign Ministry’s website has not been updated with new information about the President of Georgia. Officials respond that the website is updated periodically, and the official answer to the question is the one provided to the BSW. The ministry’s website includes a disclaimer stating that it does not guarantee the completeness or accuracy of the information, though it is updated regularly.
Who is Florian Warweg?
Florian Warweg is a German journalist who worked as an editor at the Kremlin-backed media outlet Russia Today’s German branch until 2022. That same year, the German Commission for Licensing and Supervision banned RT’s broadcasting.
Since 2022, Warweg has been part of the editorial team of the online publication NachDenkSeiten, where he works as a parliamentary correspondent. In 2023, Warweg filed a lawsuit after he was denied access to federal government press conferences as a representative of what was labeled “alternative media.” NachDenkSeiten is frequently accused of spreading conspiracy theories and is often described as pro-Russian media.
