From November 6 to 11, Georgian and Russian-speaking users on Facebook (1, 2, 3, 4) shared information claiming that President of Moldova Maia Sandu is concerned about the lack of democracy in the United States. The post includes a specific quote, attributed to the Moldovan President by Facebook users: “Such a strong and great country but failed to deal with hybrid attacks! They should have shut down Fox News, disqualified the opposition candidate on the eve of the elections, and mined the bridges. Well, they do not need my advice… I am more disappointed about this than about losing in Moldova.” In the description, Maia Sandu is referred to as the “President of the Diaspora,” thereby emphasizing that she achieved electoral victory thanks to votes from polling stations opened abroad.
The quote was also circulated by the Moldovan branch of the Russian publication Pravda.
The claim that Maia Sandu stated she is concerned about the lack of democracy in the United States is false. The original source of this information is a Telegram channel that publishes satirical posts and pamphlets.
Most of the circulated posts, as well as the article by Pravda, indicate that the original source is the Telegram channel Mr. Buimistr, which published the post on the morning of November 6. The channel is run by TV host Dmitry Buimistru. According to the channel’s description, all reports and texts shared there are pamphlets, all characters are fictional, and any resemblance to real persons is purely coincidental.
Myth Detector also verified the authenticity of the circulated information in Georgian, Romanian, English, and Russian languages, but no reliable source has shared such a claim.
It is noteworthy that on November 6, President Sandu congratulated Donald Trump on his election victory on her personal X account, emphasizing that friendship with the United States is very important for Moldova and that she looks forward to deepening cooperation for greater prosperity and a secure future for the people.
Myth Detector has previously reported on multiple occasions about claims and disinformation spread to discredit Maia Sandu.
The Facebook account Nona Sharabidze regularly shares anti-Western disinformation and pro-Kremlin narratives. False information shared by this account has been repeatedly exposed by Myth Detector.
