On September 30, during the “Time for Solidarity “ program of the political union “Solidarity for Peace”, the guest speaker Mariam Maisuradze stated that China officially requests Russia to reduce its influence in Abkhazia and so-called “South Ossetia” to successfully implement the BRICS project. Per her claim, China also requests Georgia’s inclusion in this project and to achieve this, the goal is to remove any uncertainties about the territorial integrity of Georgia. Ensuring stability in this regard is crucial for securing economic objectives.

The claim that China officially requests Russia to curb its negative influence in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region for the BRICS success has no evidence. In the BRICS framework, information about China and Russia reaching such an agreement on Georgia cannot be found in open sources.

Mariam Maisuradze noted that up until now it has benefited Russia to sustain tensions in the occupied regions of Georgia but after the initiation of the BRICS project, China requested Georgia’s engagement. She claims that Chinese requests consist of comprehensive sovereignty protection, stability, and curtailment of foreign influence.

Information regarding these Chinese demands cannot be found in open sources. China has never officially called for Russia to curb its influence in Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region or maintain Georgia’s territorial integrity.

It is important to highlight that the 2023 agreement on strategic partnership between China and Georgia doesn’t include issues regarding Abkhazia or Tskhinvali region. Even though the First Article on the subject of political domain notes that “the two sides reaffirm their respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries”, it is followed by “Georgia firmly adheres to the one-China principle”, which affirms recognition of Taiwan as part of China. A similar assertion on occupied territories of Georgia cannot be found in the document.

  • What is BRICS?

BRICS is an alliance of fast-developing countries created in 2006. Founding members are Brazil, Russia, India and China, later joined by South Africa in 2010. The name BRICS is formed from the initial letters of the member states. The alliance views itself as an alternative to G7 and key driver of the future world economy while attempting to change “the US and its allies-dominated international order”. Since January 1st, 2024 BRICS further expanded to include 4 new members: Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt. BRICS member states now account for 45% of the world population, 28% of the world economy, and 44% of refined oil.

Myth Detector” has previously fact-checked false information about BRICS, which claimed that Article 50 of the agreement included an obligation for collective defense among member states. In reality, BRICS is an informal group, it does not have a specific statute/charter and predetermined finances to cover the costs of its activities nor does it cover the defense domain.
