On August 13, lawyer Irakli Zakareishvili, a Facebook user who often spreads false news, posted a photo and claimed that American fighters were involved in the seizure of territories in the Kursk region. The photo shows a dead Russian soldier and two fighters who have the US national flag emblem on their equipment.
The claim that the circulating photograph proves the participation of American fighters in the offensive on Kursk is disinformation. The photograph was taken in the Kharkiv region in 2022, and the person depicted in it is a Ukrainian, not an American.
The photo, which shows two fighters and the corpse of a Russian soldier, was published in September 2022. At that time, the Ukrainian army managed to liberate a significant part of the Kharkiv region. The photo captures those events; in particularly, it was taken in the city of Balakliya. It is worth noting that, despite the American flag on the equipment, the fighter depicted in the picture is Ukrainian actor Serhii Filimonov. Myth Detector established his identity using the PrimEyes facial recognition search tool. He is the leader of the youth movement, Honor, and together with its members, he entered the war first as a volunteer, and then they formed a battalion, which they named “Da Vinchi Wolves.” In July 2022, Filimonov was even wounded but recovered and is now actively involved in combat operations.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Myth Detector has repeatedly debunked false information, including fake news about the participation of foreign fighters in the war.
