On August 22, Facebook users Giorgi Giorgi and Maia Tvaltvadze, as well as Russian-speaking users (1, 2, 3). distributed a video in which SpaceX and Tesla founder Elon Musk allegedly discusses wireless earbuds, calling them the most dangerous gadget because they track brain waves, brain activity, and bio-signals. In the video, Elon Musk says that people often see on social networks advertisement for things they have been thinking about, and that earbuds collect information about their thoughts.

The video in which Elon Musk talks about the threat posed by wireless headphones has been altered. The circulating clip is taken from Musk’s appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast, where he never mentioned wireless headphones.

  • Who spread the video about wireless headphones?

The video circulating on social networks, which shows Elon Musk as a guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast, was originally recorded in 2020.

An altered version of the video was first posted on Instagram on August 16 by a social media account named Radiance Rhythms, which is also known as Hunted Hub on TikTok. When posting the video on Instagram, the account clarified that the video was for entertainment purposes only and should not be taken seriously and included the hashtags “conspiracy” and “conspiracy theory.”

The TikTok account’s bio states that it is an entertainment page and shares conspiracy theories. In addition to the abovementioned video about wireless headphones, this account has posted several other altered clips from the same podcast (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). In these videos, Musk talks about negative effects of showering, illegal names in the USA, Walmart supermarket, personal care shop Sephora and its products, and the TV series Squid Game. It is worth noting that Elon Musk did not talk about these topics on Joe Rogan’s podcast. Moreover, the videos posted by Haunted Hub are identical, only texts and photos have been thematically changed.

  • What did Elon Musk actually say in the video?

In the original podcast recorded in 2020, Elon Musk discussed various topics, but he never mentioned the threat posed by wireless headphones and their tracing of brain bio-signals, waves, and activities.

The video circulating on social networks is edited, containing snippets from Joe Rogan’s podcast. For example, the episode where Rogan asks the guest, “Really?” and Musk replies, “Yeah, absolutely” (19:10), is indeed from the podcast, but here Musk is referring to his Neuralink project, not headphones. Brain waves, bio signals, and brain activities are mentioned here in the context of this project.

Neuralink is Musk’s neurotechnology company, which is building brain implants that are “capable of translating thought into action.” The company claims that its chips will help people with mobility or vision impairments regain normal functioning.

In the video, Elon Musk says that Neuralink implanted in a person’s brain will help people overcome certain diseases or disabilities; in particular, he names people with hearing and vision impairments. According to Musk, Neuralink will also help fix brain defects, restore limb functionality, and more.

In addition to technology topics, Musk and Rogan also discussed COVID-19 and regulations in place at that time, freedom of speech, Musk’s home, etc. The podcast was two hours long, and nowhere did it mention wireless headphones.

It is worth noting that on August 18, Elon Musk praised Apple’s headphones on his social media platform X, writing that they are great. All of the headphones the company released in recent times are wireless; Apple has been producing wireless headphones since 2007.
